We're running a marathon and fundraising for Autism

The Cootes’ family has set a personal challenge to run a marathon and work together to set up our first fundraiser to raise much needed funds to support people on the autism spectrum.  We are hoping to help raise awareness of autism and to fight for a more inclusive world where no-one on the autism spectrum is left behind. We would like to share with you some of our own journey.

Autism is a part of daily life for over a million Australians, including our family. Our precious little boy, Asher has autism.  His type of autism is lifelong and in fact secondary to his other diagnosis.

Our child’s special needs have brought so many gifts into our family life, the knowledge and education we receive is vital in facilitating a sense of belonging and offering opportunities to foster the joy of learning.  Our daily tasks are sometimes hard and we continue to advocate on his behalf throughout our weekly activities.

Asher’s smile can light up a room and his attempt to make friends everywhere he goes is adorable. Numbers and recounts of special interests amaze us. He is an excellent judge of character and it can be said he often finds more interesting things to do than socialising! Recently, he has been telling us to stop and breathe when life is getting a little interesting! A real example that his therapy is working. 😉

We were in and out of hospital with Asher from the age of 6 months. We went on to have weekly clinical appointments and therapy consults which were hard, some very challenging times indeed and there is nothing that anyone can do that can take that challenge away. In the early years, there are many barriers to living with an undiagnosed child. Feelings of frustration, loneliness, financial strains, and strains on a marriage are only an example of the many emotions experienced.   Autism Spectrum Australia’s initiative in fighting for a more inclusive world where no-one on the spectrum is left behind means a lot to us personally. Living in a restrictive, inflexible world unfortunately undermines the hard-won gains of parents, educators and advocates.

Please consider supporting this charity, any donation would be greatly appreciated. You would be helping to provide opportunity for people on the autism spectrum to participate, engage and thrive in the world around them. We are always looking for opportunities to give back for the support we have received from our very many talented and educated medical and therapy teams. We are now able to prepare for inclusive education next year, how wonderful is that!

Yikes, now we owe you a marathon! Wish us luck as we shall need it!!!

Thank you for reading if you got this far. 😊

Well done, Jo and Chris for finishing the marathon. Living with ASD is a tough task in a world that doesn’t readily accept illness and injury that can’t easily be seen, but we keep smiling and doing what we can for our kids, hoping that they’ll be able to lead a full and happy life.
