First Update

So I am four days in and 20kms down. I thought the runs after work were hard but today after a swim with my girl I clocked one of my slowest paces. However it's not how fast I go it's that I go. That I push through and do the best I can and reach the finish of 140kms.

As I struggled with the thought that this isn't getting easier yet, I reflected on the many challenges that others go through. The realisation that they are living in a world that is still catching up and beginning to understand accommodations and modifications are basic inclusion to allow all people in all walks to be able to give it their best go, whatever that looks like. I reflected on the need to push on and convince myself that I just need to get through this next short distance and I can relax. How often have I seen that in children and then the crash that comes after the push all day at school or at a new event or experience. This very fleeting discomfort and strain that I might feel most certainly doesn't compare.

I continued to reflect on the amazing that comes with different minds, the strength, motivation, determination and dedication that I see in those nearest and dearest to me. The creativity, the drive that comes even in the hard. The same drive I want to bring to this challenge. The challenge of the run but also the challenge for me and others to truly take the time to reflect on what others experience. To reflect on how we can continue to see different perspectives with both realism and awareness of the impact of different experiences, not with an ablism lens but a social model and for me a lived experience lens. To continue to challenge myself and others to advocate, encourage and love in whatever ways I genuinely can.

Awareness, understanding, compassion and connecting is the first step in being able to advocate. So how much do you know? What are your views? How do you support or discourage others because what you naturally can do is taken for granted? I encourage you to reflect and also reach out to learn more and become an ally not part of the problem.

I’m joining the movement to Run for Autism. But I need your help.

Why am I running 140km this October? Because 70% of Autistic people face mental health challenges.

I’m running towards a more inclusive world where Autistic Australians have the opportunity to thrive.

Please donate now and show your support to my fundraiser. You’ll be helping more Autistic people in Australia access life-changing assessments, autism-specific education, specialist therapies and adult community services.

You’ll also give me the motivation I need to log my kilometres as I go the distance throughout October. Donate now to show your support.

Thank you!
