Run for Autism

Across October I’ll run 70kms (or more hopefully) to raise funds and awareness for #Autism.  

My daughter Lana is one of many autistic children who, like it or not, has to work hard to thrive in a world that just isn’t quite ready to accept or fully support her.  

Even with how progressive our country is, we still regularly have strangers feel they can call Lana ‘naughty’ or ‘rude’ when she is verbally stimming in public or doesn’t engage with them in a neurotypical fashion. We smile through the dozens of people saying “geez, I wish my kid didn’t speak!”as if it’s a good thing that she finds it hard to verbally communicate with us and it doesn’t scare the life out of us that she couldn’t even say her own name if she got lost. We still have large swim schools saying ‘maybe this isn’t the right place for Lana’ When she just is trying to engage in a group learning environment and socialise, rather than responding to complex instructions and doing the swim assessments.

Our family is lucky to have a strong support network and the means to support Lana to shine. Unfortunately, other children and families may not be so fortunate.  My hope is that through raising awareness of the challenges that #neurodiverse families experience, we can help society move towards providing a consistently safe and supporting environment for #neurodivergent people to thrive in whatever way they chose.
