Kit Couper

I’m joining the movement to Run for Autism. But I need your help.

Why am I running 35km this October? Because 70% of Autistic people face mental health challenges and, while I'm not a runner, I'm keen to actively participate in and support this cause.

As an adult who has masked their way through life without realising, I've struggled to feel a sense of belonging and find my purpose in a world where I've just never quite felt like I "fit". Self-censorship, fawning and overcompensating became coping mechanisms to avoid being shunned or targeted. Over the years I've sought treatment for symptoms of lifelong depression and anxiety without understanding the hidden source of these maladies until more recently. I'm now in the process of an AuDHD diagnosis myself and it's liberating, but it's also decades too late.

I’m running towards a more inclusive world where Autistic Australians have the opportunity to thrive. Despite very recent famous (and unsubstantiated) claims about the origins of Austim, Autism doesn't have to be perceived through a deficit-coloured lens. In my experience, the neurodiverse experience can offer the most wonderful and unique gifts and insights. The issue isn't with the condition, but with an approach to it that lacks curiousity, openmindedness and acceptance.

Please donate now and show your support for this fundraiser.  You’ll be helping provide early diagnosis, autism-specific education, and better mental health services - so that more Autistic people can access the support they need to realise their "different brilliant".

I'm committed to hobbling 35kms despite being VERY out of condition this October, but your dontations will give me the motivation and accountability I need to log my kilometres as I go the distance throughout October.

Donate now to show your support and be on my team of cheerleaders - every dollar helps!
