Run for Autism run number 9! 7km to go!

So close to my goal, just 7km to go.  I have made it past $1000, thanks to Tim Sapsford for getting me over the line! Legend!

Run for Autism number 8. Home stretch.

56km down, 14km to go! Ask me how much I love running in the rain…

Please consider donating or sharing if you haven’t already, I’m so close to my goal.

Run for Autism run number 7

Another 7km makes 49. 21km to go. My shoes are wet!

Run for Autism run number 6.

Another 7km done. This one felt challenging. My legs weren’t working like they should, I could feel something in my shoe, my left shoe was a bit tighter than my right, and somehow I had a headwind all the way (?!). Today I had the mind of a racehorse, but the body of a donkey!

These challenges pale in comparison to what people with Autism experience on a daily basis. Autism is often misunderstood and romanticised by those who don’t know better, but it can be monumentally challenging some days. The world is slowly becoming more Autism friendly, but there is always more to do.

Community and support is so important. Hit me up if you ever want to talk about all things Autism, share stories, or just not feel so alone on this journey.

Thanks again for the wonderful support!

Run for Autism run number 5: 7km

I’m officially halfway there! Thanks for your support!

Run for Autism number 4 - This is my “why?”

Run number four and 28km done!

Those of you who know me understand why I am so passionate about this cause. For those of you who don’t, let me introduce to you the reason I’m doing this.

Early one January morning in 2019, a boy named Jacob came crashing into our world. True to his form for impatience, he was born early. Nonetheless, he proved us all wrong and thrived.

As new parents, my husband and I wanted to get it perfect. We embarked on our journey with Jacob, learning and growing along the way. Pretty early on we noticed that perhaps Jacob was a little different. He wasn’t interacting with us like the other children interacted with their parents. He was a little behind with some milestones. We chalked it up to prematurity and kept on.

The years went on, and some things were amiss. He wasn’t talking, and didn’t seem interested in things that his peers were interested in. He liked lining things up. He got a monumental amount of joy from drains and aircon units.

Luckily, we had a brilliant paediatrician in Professor David Coman. He was a very no nonsense, pragmatic man who got us through a lot. It was very early on, around age two, that he broke the news that surprised literally no one. Jacob had Autism.

Since that day, we were determined that nothing would hold our beautiful boy back. We invested intensively in speech therapy, occupational therapy and early interventions. We thought he might never speak or communicate. Spoiler alert: joke was on us, the breakthrough came at around age four, and he hasn’t stopped since!

Jacob is now seven years old, and a beautiful, caring, sometimes stubborn and spicy boy.

Long story short, we all know or love somebody with autism. They face endless challenges, but they all deserve a full, meaningful life. And that’s why I’m doing this!

Run for Autism run number 1

7km down, 63 to go! Thank you to everybody who has supported, shared or donated so far.

I’m joining the movement to Run for Autism. But I need your help.

Why am I running 70km this October? Because 70% of Autistic people face mental health challenges.

I’m running towards a more inclusive world where Autistic Australians have the opportunity to thrive.

Please donate now and show your support to my fundraiser.  You’ll be helping provide early diagnosis, autism-specific education, and critical research into mental health issues experienced by Autistic people so they can access the support they need to realise their different brilliant®.

You’ll also give me the motivation I need to log my kilometres as I go the distance throughout October. Donate now to show your support.

Thank you!
