Kitty Henwood

I’m joining the movement to Run for Autism again this year. But I need your help.

Why am I running 30km this October? Because 70% of Autistic people face mental health and lifestyle challenges.

About Oscar

As most of you know, it has been a process of diagnosing my son, Oscar, from an early age with Autisim Spectrum Disorder 2. Most of you know about the diagnosis but would not have a personal insight into everyday life living with a neurodiverse child.

Each day, as parents of Oscar, and as I am sure most other households with children on the Spectrum can attest to, we face a million small challenges. Life with an ASD2 child involves navigating a complex web of communication, social interaction, and daily routines. Here are some insights into the challenges and support needed for children with ASD2:

Communication Challenges: ASD2 children may have limited speech and struggle with initiating or maintaining conversations. They might use simple sentences or have trouble following back-and-forth conversations.

Social Interaction: They often find nonverbal interactions complicated and may respond in ways that are seen as inappropriate by neurotypical individuals. Difficulty with social cues, gestures, and facial expressions is common.

Repetitive Behaviours: ASD2 children may exhibit repetitive behaviours, such as engaging in specific movements or activities, and have a strong preference for routines.

Sensory Sensitivities: They may be overly sensitive or not sensitive enough to various stimuli, such as lights, sounds, textures, or smells, which can lead to discomfort in certain environments.

Support Needs: A comprehensive support system is essential, including structured interventions like ABA therapy, school support, and consistent routines. Early intervention and tailored educational programs can significantly improve outcomes.

Understanding the unique needs of an ASD2 child is crucial for providing effective support and fostering their growth and independence.

From how we self-regulate for our children, what we provide them that feeds their young minds, their OT appointments, their health challenges, interpersonal relationships - ASD affects it all!

I’m running towards a more inclusive world where Autistic Australians have the opportunity to thrive.

Please donate now and show your support to my fundraiser.  You’ll be helping provide early diagnosis, autism-specific education, and critical research into mental health issues experienced by Autistic people so they can access the support they need to realise their different brilliant®.

You’ll also give me the motivation I need to log my kilometres as I go the distance throughout October. Donate now to show your support.

Thank you! Kitty
