My Special Little Friend Forever
This October, I’m taking on 70km for the Aspect Run for Autism, raising money for my son Austin and for other children and families living with autism.
Austin is a happy, friendly and incredibly loving 14-year-old who experiences autism at the more significant end of the spectrum. He is non-verbal, highly energetic and sensory, with plenty of the behaviours people may recognise — flapping, repetition and a constant need to move and explore the world around him.
But those things are only part of Austin.
He’s a boy who loves big hugs, trampolines, riding his bike and swinging as high as he can. He has a beautiful nature, an infectious smile, and finds happiness in his own unique way.
Being the parent of a child with autism can be tough. There are challenges, worries about the future, exhausting days and a world that isn't always designed to understand or accommodate kids like Austin.
I also know how fortunate Austin and I are. Austin is surrounded by people who love him, support him and want the very best for him. Not every child or family has the same support, resources or opportunities.
That’s why I’m running.
If the money I raise can help another child or family get some of the support, understanding and opportunities that have made a difference for Austin, then every kilometre will be worth it.
70km during October — for Austin, for families like mine, and for those who need a little more help along the way.
Austin is, and always will be, my special little friend forever. ❤️
And I’m doing this for him.
