I’m running this October for the 1 in 70 Australians on the autism spectrum.
This month I’m running 70km to raise money for autism.
This is a cause very close to my heart. My son was diagnosed with autism at age 8. It was a very difficult journey to get a diagnosis and getting the right supports in place is an ongoing challenge for our family. But we are one of the lucky families.
Everyday in my work as a GP I see families struggling without a diagnosis or support due to the endless waitlists for paediatricians and supportive therapies. Did you know that schools are unable to getting funding to support an autistic child until an official diagnosis is made?
With waitlists of over 2 years in the public system, and many private paediatricians having no capacity for new patients, that leaves a child severely disadvantaged.
Evidence shows again and again that early intervention is key.
